The Rise of Granite Counters:

Growing up, granite was just an igneous rock that I learned about in geology class.

Today, even landlords in mid-range rentals realize the value of granite counters. Not only does the material make a property easier to rent, but it’s more resilient than other options currently available.

Granite for counters came on the market in the 1980s. But at that time, supply was limited and cost was high. Basically, granite was a product for those who had plenty of disposable income.

Not only was granite expensive, color choices were limited.

But soon, the color pallet exploded and prices for entry-level product dropped. Builders began to recognize that adding granite counters to their model homes increased sales. Even builder-grade slabs exude luxury.

What makes granite so special?

Certainly, durability plays a part. It resists staining. It’s hard as a rock, pun intended, therefore it is hard to damage. And it’s gorgeous.

Also, granite is unique. No two slabs are exactly alike. It is real stone. Having granite counters is like bringing a piece of nature into the home.

Granite is one of the hardest natural stones on the planet. It is more heat resistant and scratch resistant than other products currently available.

It's also easy to clean.

And granite counters add value to the home. Just ask any Realtor, they will tell you: “Kitchens and Bathrooms sell houses.”

One other fact about granite – it does not contain calcite. This is the pesky mineral that reacts with acid and makes many natural stones problematic for counters.

The chemical reaction caused by acid and calcite eats the shine off polished surfaces, which is called etching. Not so with granite, which is impervious to the acid contained in tomatoes, lemons, vinegar and other foods.

All the above reasons make granite a popular and wise choice for  any counter.
